Valentine’s day rose prices soar in Bengal; Dutch roses hit ₹60 amid high demand

With Valentine’s Day approaching, rose prices across West Bengal have surged, driven by high demand and limited supply. Markets in East Midnapore, including Kolaghat and Deulia Bazaar, are witnessing a sharp increase in sales, with Dutch roses selling for ₹50–₹60 per piece. Italian and Mini Pearl roses, usually priced at ₹2–₹5, have also seen a hike, now costing ₹5–₹10.

Dutch roses, preferred for their long stems and aesthetic appeal, are primarily imported from Bengaluru and other states. Traders report that these premium roses are in high demand among young buyers, significantly influencing market trends. “The demand for Dutch roses rises sharply every year before February 14,” said a florist from Kolaghat. “We receive bulk orders from customers and event organizers.”

West Bengal is a major hub for floriculture, with farmers cultivating roses on a large scale for local sales and exports. The seasonal demand spike benefits growers, who see a substantial price increase compared to the rest of the year. Apart from direct sales, bulk orders from wedding planners and event decorators also contribute to rising prices.

Despite the booming trade, some sellers anticipate a slight drop in sales due to the ongoing secondary and higher secondary examinations. Vendors in key flower markets believe that students, a significant customer base, may reduce purchases this year. However, they expect steady demand from regular buyers, ensuring strong sales figures.

Market experts predict that the price surge will continue until Valentine’s Day before stabilizing. With high sales reported across districts, traders and farmers are making the most of this seasonal opportunity. The trend follows previous years, where February 14 remains the most profitable day for the rose industry in the state.
