Veteran social worker and educationist Sardarmal Kankaria passed away at the age of 98 at Shri Jain Hospital in Howrah, marking the end of a life dedicated to selfless service and public welfare. Known for his unwavering commitment to humanity and the principles of Karma Yoga, Kankaria remained actively involved in social work even in his advanced years, inspiring generations through his actions and ideals.
Born in Gogolav village in Rajasthan’s Nagaur district, Kankaria moved to Kolkata in 1945 with a vision to contribute to society. He began his professional journey in his family’s jute business and film distribution before gradually devoting himself to social and community work. His association with the Shri Shwetambar Sthanakvasi Jain Sabha helped him emerge as a respected figure, and in 1958, his appointment as Secretary of Shri Jain Vidyalaya in Kolkata marked the beginning of his extensive contributions to education and welfare.
Over the decades, Kankaria played a pivotal role in establishing and guiding several educational and healthcare institutions across Kolkata and Howrah. These include Shri Jain Vidyalaya in Kolkata and Howrah, Shri Taradevi Harkhchand Kankaria Jain College in Kashipur, Kusum Devi Sundarlal Dugad Jain Dental College, Jagatdal Shri Jain Vidyalaya, Kamla Devi Sohanraj Singhvi Jain B.Ed College, and Shri Jain Futuristic International Academy. These institutions continue to hold a prominent place in the region’s educational landscape.
Kankaria’s life was guided by a philosophy rooted in selfless service and moral values. His belief that true devotion lies in serving people reflected his deep spiritual discipline and commitment to nation-building. Remembered as a compassionate humanitarian, dedicated educator, and Karm Yogi, his legacy will continue to inspire efforts toward social upliftment and community development for years to come.
