No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A violent confrontation broke out at Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Hospital on Monday night, turning the premises into a battleground following allegations of negligence in treating a road accident victim. The situation escalated into repeated clashes between junior doctors and the patient’s family, leaving several people injured and prompting doctors to call a strike from Tuesday demanding improved security.
According to hospital sources, the incident began around 10:30 PM when a critically injured accident victim was brought to the emergency department. The patient’s family alleged that despite severe head injuries and continuous bleeding, treatment was delayed, worsening his condition and triggering a heated argument with the attending doctors.
Hospital authorities, however, claimed that the situation turned violent after the patient’s relatives, along with outsiders, allegedly attacked junior doctors. The family, on the other hand, accused the doctors of misconduct, including assault and inappropriate behaviour towards female members, further intensifying tensions.
As the news spread, a large number of junior doctors and medical students gathered at the emergency unit, leading to further confrontation. The clash resulted in injuries to at least two junior doctors and three members of the patient’s family, while chaos continued within the hospital premises.
Police from Kalyani Police Station were deployed to bring the situation under control, with additional forces stationed due to ongoing tension. Junior doctors have demanded enhanced security measures, including CCTV coverage, and have announced a strike until safety is ensured, while hospital authorities said a probe will be conducted to determine the sequence of events.
