A violent clash broke out on Sunday morning in the southern Chandiipur area of Manikchak, Malda, involving supporters of CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress (TMC). The violence was sparked by an ongoing dispute over irregularities in the local housing scheme list, which led to both sides engaging in physical confrontations. The clash escalated with brick and stone pelting, resulting in multiple houses being set on fire and several motorbikes being destroyed.
The dispute revolves around the inclusion of certain individuals in the housing scheme list, with Danesh Ali, a district council member of CITU, accusing TMC leader Abir Ali and 12 of his family members of being wrongfully added to the list. Two weeks ago, Ali filed a written complaint with the Manikchak Block and District Magistrate, alleging that the inclusion of these names was improper. The complaint was reportedly ignored, leading to further tensions in the community.
On Sunday, Danesh Ali was allegedly ambushed by Abir Ali and a group of 10 to 15 individuals armed with firearms, knives, and sickles. The attackers reportedly targeted Ali in retaliation for his complaint and protests against the housing scheme. During the assault, Ali sustained serious injuries. The violent exchange between the two groups caused chaos, with residents reporting large-scale stone pelting and physical assaults.
A large police contingent from the Manikchak police station was deployed to the area to restore order. The police arrived promptly, and the situation was eventually brought under control. However, no arrests have been made so far. Local authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway, and the police have assured that action will be taken against those responsible for the violence. No fatalities have been reported, and the area is under close surveillance as authorities continue to monitor the situation.
