Wangchuk demands 'no action' against students, sets conditions to end hunger strike

Activist Sonam Wangchuk has written a letter to Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh following their hospital visit to appeal for an end to his indefinite hunger strike. In his letter dated July 22, 2026, Wangchuk noted that the ministers had verbally assured positive consideration for key demands, including compensation for families of students who died by suicide following examination paper leaks and a parliamentary discussion on education accountability.

Wangchuk emphasized that over 65 Members of Parliament across political spectrums have urged him to end his fast, reminding him of his continued service to the nation. However, he stated that he cannot call off his fast at the expense of the youth who spearheaded the movement, citing the excessive use of force and police action during the peaceful 'Chalo Sansad' march on July 20.

To break his hunger strike, Wangchuk requested an unequivocal assurance from the central government that no young protesters will face retaliatory or punitive legal action for participating. He warned that in the absence of such a written assurance protecting the student demonstrators, he would be forced to continue his fast indefinitely.
