Darjeeling witnessed a tragic incident on Tuesday morning as the National Orchid Research Center fell prey to a massive fire that erupted in its two-story building. The fire resulted in severe damage, consuming expensive equipment, including refrigerators, approximately 20-22 air conditioners, valuable research papers, and furniture.
Fire brigade vehicles rushed to the scene upon receiving the information and managed to bring the fire under control, but extensive damage had already occurred.
According to sources within the research center, the fire originated behind the electricity meter box in the morning. The incident quickly escalated, and the flames rapidly spread throughout the premises, causing significant harm to the research center. Goods worth lakhs of rupees were reduced to ashes in the destructive fire.
The matter is currently under investiagtion.
