A major water crisis looms over parts of Asansol after an iron bridge carrying the main PHE water pipeline over the Damodar river collapsed at Kala Jharia on Monday morning. The collapse has severely damaged the pipeline, which supplies water to multiple localities, raising concerns of prolonged disruption.
The iron bridge, built years ago to support the rising main pipeline from the PHE pump house at Kala Jharia, suddenly gave way mid-span. Officials are assessing the damage, but early estimates suggest that repairs could take several days, if not longer.
Residents in affected areas have been alerted to prepare for dry taps, as emergency supply arrangements may not fully meet the demand. The collapse has sparked questions about the condition of aging infrastructure and the lack of timely maintenance.
Local authorities are expected to release an official schedule for water rationing and alternative arrangements soon. Meanwhile, repair teams have been mobilized to restore the critical link as quickly as possible.
