Parade begins at Red Road to celebrate India's 76th Republic Day
Kolkata’s water supply will be temporarily suspended in several areas of Gardenreach and South Kolkata from 9 AM on January 18 to 6 AM on January 19 for essential maintenance and repair work. The maintenance will focus on the Gardenreach water supply system, which provides drinking water to a large portion of South Kolkata.
The areas affected by the disruption include Kalighat, Ranikuthi, Garia, Chetla, Golf Green, Behala, Bansdroni, Mitiabruz, Tollygunge, Jadavpur, Motiabruz, Maheshtala, and Bajbaj. The interruption is due to necessary repairs on the Gardenreach water treatment plant and the distribution network, which is undergoing updates to improve water supply and reduce system failures.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) had previously shut down the Tala Tank water supply in December 2024 for repairs, which caused a temporary water shortage across parts of the city. These disruptions are part of an ongoing initiative by the KMC to address and upgrade the city’s aging water infrastructure. Regular maintenance of the system is necessary to ensure consistent and reliable water distribution to all areas.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to store water in advance to mitigate the impact of the shutdown. KMC has issued a notification urging residents to take necessary precautions and ensure they have adequate water supplies during the temporary disruption.
In addition to the water supply disruption, the KMC also reaffirmed its stance on illegal constructions within the city. Buildings with Completion Certificates (CC) will not face any disruptions in services. However, illegal constructions must be resolved within 90 days, with penalties imposed, including the refusal of trade licenses and loans for such properties. The KMC is implementing stricter measures to curb illegal construction, with an emphasis on ensuring that infrastructure and services are not compromised by unauthorized developments.
