More than 300 mail and express trains and 406 passenger trains were canceled between July 7 and July 15 due to waterlogged tracks following heavy rains in India in the recent days, officials said on Thursday.
In all, about 600 mail/express trains and more than 500 passenger trains were affected by waterlogging in the country, officials said.
Northwest India has experienced continuous rainfall for three days since Saturday, with many areas in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan recording "heavy to extremely heavy" rains.
This led to overflowing rivers, streams and drains that massively damaged infrastructure and disrupted essential services in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab.
Northern Railway, which caters to the region, has canceled about 300 mail/express trains, grounded 100 trains and diverted 191 others. According to officials, around 67 trains were also created.
According to them, Northern Railways also canceled 406 passenger trains, diverted 28 trains, 56 in short origin and 54 short trains due to heavy waterlogging.
