West Bengal electoral revision sees 50,000 unmapped voters marked for deletion over non-appearance

Around 1.6 percent of the identified “unmapped” voters in West Bengal are set to be removed from the final electoral roll after failing to appear for verification hearings with required identification documents, despite repeated notices. Electoral registration officers have concluded that these voters are ineligible to remain on the rolls under the ongoing revision exercise.

Sources at the Chief Electoral Officer’s office said that a total of 31,68,426 unmapped voters were called for hearings across the state. Of these, more than 50,000 voters, did not attend the hearings and are now being processed for deletion from the final list. Officials confirmed that hearings related to unmapped voters have been completed, while hearings involving “logical discrepancy” cases are currently underway. Unmapped voters are defined as those who could not establish linkage with the 2002 electoral roll through self-mapping or progeny mapping, whereas logical discrepancy cases involve inconsistencies detected in family-related data during verification.

As many as 94,49,132 voters have been identified under the logical discrepancy category and summoned for hearings, which are continuing and expected to conclude by February 7. In the draft electoral roll released in December 2025, 58,20,899 names were removed due to death, relocation, or duplication, with the final figures to be known after publication of the final roll on February 14, ahead of the announcement of assembly election dates.
