West Bengal pollution control board enlists students for eco-friendly diwali initiatives

Kolkata: In a strategic move to combat the adverse environmental impact of Diwali celebrations, the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) has collaborated with students across various educational institutions in Kolkata.

WBPCB officials conducted sessions with students, engaging them as environmental stewards to monitor and discourage the use of banned fireworks during the festival. Approximately 200 students participated in the meeting held at the WBPCB headquarters, with over a thousand joining the initiative online. Notably, WBPCB maintains a network of 5,622 students in Bengal, known as the 'green corps,' actively involved in the board's advocacy and outreach programs.

Meanwhile, across cities like Pune, educational institutions are taking proactive steps to educate students about the harmful effects of firecrackers. Students are encouraged to celebrate a green Diwali, pledging to explore eco-friendly alternatives and prioritize sustainable decorations over traditional firecrackers. Additionally, the West Bengal Police warns individuals against using banned firecrackers, with potential legal consequences, as they intensify efforts to seize illegal fireworks and maintain public safety.
