Health officials in West Bengal have reported 36 cases of the latest Covid variant, KP.2, detected through genomic sequencing. This variant, an offshoot of Omicron, is gradually replacing the JN.1 variant and has been identified in approximately half of the sequenced samples. While KP.2 is causing only mild symptoms, experts are closely monitoring its transmission rate, especially with the upcoming election season.
Microbiologist Bhaskar Narayan Chaudhuri of Peerless Hospital explained that KP.2 belongs to the FLiRT group of SARS-CoV2 variants, known for independently acquiring similar mutations through convergent evolution. Although there's a possibility of increased KP.2 infections during the election season, health experts stress that there's no imminent alarm, emphasizing the importance of monitoring for any upticks in severe infections or hospitalizations.
