West Indies cricket legend Gary Sobers passes away; was first to smash 6 sixes in 6 balls

The cricketing fraternity is united in grief following the death of former West Indies captain and legendary all-rounder Sir Garfield Sobers, who passed away at the age of 89. His son, Daniel, confirmed that the icon breathed his last at his residence in Barbados. Widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers to have ever graced the game, Sobers passed away just ten days shy of celebrating his 90th birthday, marking the end of a truly monumental era for global cricket.

Born in Barbados, Sobers enjoyed an illustrious international career that spanned two decades between March 1954 and April 1974. The brilliant left-handed batter and versatile left-arm bowler represented the West Indies in 93 Test matches, amassing 8,032 runs at an outstanding average of 57.78, featuring 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries. In addition to his exceptional batting prowess, his dynamic bowling skills allowed him to claim 235 Test wickets, cementing his reputation as the sport's ultimate all-rounder.

Beyond his incredible stats, Sobers etched his name permanently into cricket folklore in 1968 by becoming the first player in First-Class cricket history to smash six sixes off consecutive deliveries in a single over while playing for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan. His enduring impact on the sport remains immortalized by the International Cricket Council (ICC), which has proudly awarded the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy annually to the Men's Cricketer of the Year since 2004.

Emotional tributes have poured in from major cricketing bodies across the globe to honor his immeasurable contribution. Cricket West Indies released a poignant statement celebrating his life, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a memorable video of Sobers interacting with Indian stars like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, expressing deep condolences to his family and the global cricket community. Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club also joined in mourning, saluting him as an iconic figure who fundamentally redefined the game.
