West Indies to miss Andre Russell, Nicholas Pooran in upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka

The West Indies cricket team is preparing for a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka starting on October 13, 2024. Key senior players - Andre Russell, Nicholas Pooran, Akeal Hosein, and Shimron Hetmyer—have opted out of the series due to personal reasons. This absence could impact the team's performance, especially after their recent success, which saw them climbing to third in the T20I rankings following a clean sweep against South Africa earlier this year.

In light of these withdrawals, head coach Darren Sammy has made strategic selections, recalling Evin Lewis and Brandon King to bolster the squad. Lewis returns to the T20I setup after last playing in the 2022 T20 World Cup, while King rejoins following recovery from a side injury. Additionally, pace bowling allrounders Terrance Hinds and Shamar Springer have received their first national call-ups, emphasizing the team's commitment to nurturing emerging talent during this transitional phase.

Rovman Powell will continue to lead the T20I side, with Roston Chase serving as vice-captain. The ODI squad, led by Shai Hope with Alzarri Joseph as vice-captain, also features 17-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Jewel Andrew, marking an exciting addition. Sammy expressed confidence in the squad's ability to adapt and compete effectively, stating, “The tour of Sri Lanka gives us a chance to test our depth and assess players in different situations.” The T20I matches will take place in Dambulla on October 13, 15, and 17, followed by the ODI series in Pallekele on October 20, 23, and 26. With a blend of seasoned players and promising newcomers.
