Karandighi MLA Biraj Biswas was sworn in as a Minister of State during the full cabinet swearing-in ceremony held at Lok Bhavan on Monday. At 32 years of age, he is among the youngest members of the state cabinet. Biswas, who represents the Karandighi Assembly constituency in Uttar Dinajpur district, took the oath alongside 34 other legislators inducted into the ministry. His inclusion in the cabinet follows his victory in the 2026 Assembly election, where he defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Gautam Pal by a margin of nearly 20,000 votes.
A lawyer by profession and an advocate at the Calcutta High Court, Biswas has been associated with student politics for several years. His political journey began through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), after which he became active in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Over time, he served as the organisation’s State Secretary and later as its All-India Secretary. He has been involved in organisational activities and political campaigns across the state during his career.
Biswas also emerged as a prominent figure during the Daribhit movement and was associated with the agitation in the region. Following his election to the Assembly, he was selected for induction into the state cabinet. He arrived in Kolkata from Raiganj on Monday and proceeded to Lok Bhavan to participate in the swearing-in ceremony. The allocation of ministerial portfolios is expected to be announced separately by the government.
