The onset of winter in South Bengal — including Kolkata — may be delayed due to a potential cyclonic system forming in the Bay of Bengal. The Regional Meteorological Center in Alipore said on Monday that a low-pressure area has become active, increasing the chances of significant weather changes in the coming days.
According to the department, the low-pressure system is likely to intensify into a depression on November 24, and further strengthen into a cyclonic storm by November 26. If it develops, the cyclone will be named “Senyar,” a name suggested by the United Arab Emirates.
Officials stated that the path of the possible cyclone remains unclear. If the system moves toward the Bengal or Odisha coasts, it will directly influence local weather and delay the arrival of winter. Even if it shifts in another direction, indirect effects such as a rise in temperature are still expected, though they will not last long.
The Meteorological Department added that clearer indications regarding the storm’s direction and intensity will be known within the next two days.
