A 30-year-old woman in Hathras district’s Sanjay Colony attempted to take her own life on Monday after being allegedly betrayed by her brother-in-law. The woman, who had been married for 14 years, lost her husband just a few months ago. Following the tragedy, she claimed that her brother-in-law had consistently assured her that he would marry her and take responsibility for her future, providing her with much-needed emotional support during her grieving period.
However, the situation took a dark turn when the brother-in-law abruptly refused to fulfill his promise of marriage. This rejection left the woman deeply distressed and feeling abandoned by her family. In a fit of despair, she locked herself inside a room and attempted to hang herself from a ceiling fan using a saree. Her family members, sensing something was wrong when she didn't respond, raised an immediate alarm and contacted the local Sasni police station.
The police response was exceptionally swift. Officers arrived at the scene within minutes and, with the assistance of relatives, managed to break into the room just in time to bring her down. She was rushed to the nearby Community Health Centre (CHC) in a semi-conscious state. Doctors at the facility confirmed that the prompt intervention by the police and family members was the sole reason she survived the attempt.
Currently, the woman is reported to be in stable condition and is receiving counseling. The local police have initiated an inquiry into the matter. While no formal FIR has been lodged yet, officials are speaking to the family members to understand the sequence of events and the allegations made against the brother-in-law.
