A 34-year-old woman died after she was hit by a truck near Sheikhpura Mor under Shastri Nagar police station area in the state capital on Monday morning. The deceased was identified as Soni Devi, wife of Ashok Bind of Bildari Tola. She was returning home with her husband on a bicycle after preparations for Chaiti Chhath Puja when the accident occurred.
Local residents staged a violent protest and vandalized a nearby police patrol, attacked passing vehicles and burned tires to block Bailey Road.
Soni worked as a domestic helper. The police sent the body to IGIMS for autopsy. Her husband was also injured in the accident, which happened around 10:30 am. The couple was returning home when an unidentified vehicle coming from the Gola Road side rear-ended their bicycle, crushing the woman to death. The family members claimed that the traffic police caught the four-wheeler but let it go after taking a bribe.
During the protest, locals also ransacked the stage set up to welcome new BJP state president Samrat Chaudhary. They also tore up the poster at the reception. They demanded compensation for the bereaved family and the arrest of the accused driver. The blockade was lifted only after the local police reached the spot and assured the protesters to arrest the accused soon.
