A 40-year-old woman, Sushma Prasad, died after falling from a railway bridge in Ultadanga while trying to escape an approaching train. The incident occurred around 7 AM on Friday when Sushma and her husband, Bikash Prasad, were walking along the railway tracks after getting off at Bidhannagar station. As they reached the bridge, trains approached from both directions, leaving them stranded. In an attempt to escape, Sushma jumped through a gap in the bridge and fell onto the road below, suffering fatal head injuries.
Her husband, Bikash, also fell and sustained serious injuries after landing on the stones beside the tracks. He was rushed to the hospital and remains under treatment. Locals alerted the authorities, and officers from Lake Town police station recovered the body. The area where the incident occurred is known for frequent pedestrian movement on railway tracks despite repeated warnings from authorities.
Railway Police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Officials have reiterated safety advisories, urging people not to walk on tracks or cross railway bridges. The absence of designated pedestrian crossings in certain areas has raised concerns, with similar accidents reported in the past.
