Locals stumbled upon the lifeless body of a 40-year-old woman lying in a jungle just steps away from her house in Nodakhali police station area under South 24 Parganas district. The woman, whose husband had passed away few years ago, was found with only a blood-stained sheet covering her half-naked body, clothes scattered and multiple injury marks visible. Neighbours present in the spot says the scene was so gruesome that many broke down instantly. They carried her to the nearest hospital, but doctors declared her brought dead.
The entire locality is now gripped with fear and anger as everyone believes she was raped and then brutally murdered. Family members are devastated and insist the crime happened in the jungle right beside their home. “She was a gentle soul with no enemies. Someone dragged her there, violated her and killed her,” claims her family. Nodakhali police station officers reached the spot quickly, sealed the area and recovered the bloodied sheet and torn clothes as evidence.
Two have already been detained and the police have registered a murder case and filed an FIR. It will be possible to say whether rape took place or not only after the autopsy. Officers are waiting for the post-mortem report to confirm sexual assault, but visible multiple injury marks have made everyone fear the worst. Locals consoling the grieving family and demands swift justice. Women in the neighbourhood, many of whom knew her as a helpful daily-wage worker, say they no longer feel safe stepping out after sunset but the blood-soaked sheet lying in the jungle has left scars that won’t fade easily. Until the killers are caught, this peaceful village will sleep with doors bolted and hearts heavy with grief.
