A homemaker in Malda’s English Bazar Block was allegedly attacked by her daughter-in-law, who attempted to burn her alive on suspicion of witchcraft. The incident took place in the Jahartala Gobindpur area under Jadupur 2 Gram Panchayat. According to the victim’s complaint, she had been facing repeated accusations since the death of her two sons due to illness a few years ago. The daughter-in-law allegedly blamed her for their deaths and frequently assaulted her, leading to the recent attack. Local residents intervened and rescued the woman before the situation escalated further.
Police arrested the accused daughter-in-law and a relative following the complaint filed at English Bazar police station. Eyewitnesses stated that the woman was being attacked when neighbors rushed to her aid. Officials confirmed that the victim had been subjected to physical violence in the past over similar allegations. "She was often accused and beaten. That day, her daughter-in-law tried to burn her," said a local resident. The police are examining past disputes and any previous complaints linked to the ongoing tensions within the family.
The victim’s son has claimed the matter is a family dispute and not related to witchcraft allegations. However, the police have launched an investigation based on the victim’s complaint and witness statements. Authorities are recording statements from other family members and local residents. The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the law, and further legal proceedings are underway.
