Court sends Councilor Mahesh Sharma to 6-day police custody in extortion case
A woman has been arrested in Bongaon, North 24 Parganas, in connection with a sensational fraud case where a single second-hand vehicle was allegedly shown to one customer but sold to another. The complaint alleges that the accused couple not only engaged in this deceit but also misappropriated a significant amount of money taken from the initial buyer under the pretense of selling the vehicle. The accused woman has been identified as Ankita Ghosh.
Ankita Ghosh and her husband, residents of the Shaktigarh area under Bongaon police station jurisdiction, reportedly deal in the buying and selling of used vehicles. A local man from Bongaon recently purchased a second-hand vehicle from the couple, who subsequently took more money from him, claiming it was for the vehicle’s registration process. However, the situation turned suspicious when the buyer received no communication despite repeated calls and a prolonged wait for his vehicle.
The victim eventually learned that the couple had allegedly sold the same vehicle to another customer at a higher price. When the youth approached the couple demanding the vehicle, they began to stall, leading him to discover the full extent of the fraud after significant pressure. Following this, the victim filed a written complaint with the Bongaon Police Station. Police investigated and arrested Ankita Ghosh from the Shaktigarh area.
Police's initial investigation suggests that the couple has likely been involved in similar old-car selling scams before, often taking money from multiple people by showing them the same vehicle. The police are now trying to ascertain the total number of people involved in this racket and the cumulative amount of money defrauded. Ankita Ghosh was produced before the Bongaon Sub-Divisional Court on Monday, and the police have stated they will seek her custody for further interrogation.
