Residents of Domantola in Malda’s Manikchak block staged a protest on Monday demanding the closure of an alleged illegal liquor shop operating near their village. Women from the area marched to the site with brooms in hand and raised slogans before the police, stating that they would not allow any liquor shop to function near their homes.
According to local residents, a man named Navin Mandal had begun construction on a building, claiming it was meant for a residence. Later, he reportedly said it would house a hardware store. However, villagers alleged that liquor was being sold from the premises, prompting them to organize the protest. Protesters said this was the first time they became aware of liquor sales from that spot and responded collectively to stop it.
The protest led to tension in the Domantola area under Bhutni police station. Villagers demanded immediate action and said the shop must be shut down to prevent further issues. As of now, no official statement has been issued by local police or administrative authorities regarding the status of the shop or any investigation.
