Tension gripped Kharai village under Tamluk police station in Shahid Matangini block of East Medinipur after local women allegedly stormed the house of a woman accused of selling liquor illegally. The accused, identified as Monalisa Das, had reportedly ignored repeated pleas to stop the sale, and instead, allegedly issued threats to those opposing her.
On Sunday, a large group of women from the village gathered and surrounded her house. They vandalized the property, pulled out the stock of liquor, and destroyed it in public. Eyewitnesses said the protest had been building up for weeks, with anger over the alleged illicit trade reaching a tipping point.
Villagers claimed that the illegal sale of liquor had led to a spike in thefts in the area and increased incidents of domestic violence. Several women alleged that their husbands, addicted to liquor bought from the accused, had been assaulting them. The protest, they said, was the only way left to protect their community.
The incident caused a stir across the area, with police presence deployed to prevent further escalation. No official statement from law enforcement was available at the time of reporting.
