In a significant move, the Lok Sabha has passed the Women's Reservation Bill, officially titled the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam,' with a resounding majority of 454 votes in favor and only 2 against it. The bill, which required a two-thirds majority to pass in the Lok Sabha, witnessed widespread support.
During the debate on the bill, Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized that it would provide reservation for women across the current three categories - General, SCs, and STs - under which Members of Parliament are currently elected. He also outlined that the bill's implementation would follow the census and delimitation processes after the elections. Shah expressed optimism that these exercises would grant women a more prominent role in Parliament.
Conversely, opposition parties, including the Congress, have called for the immediate implementation of the bill and also proposed the inclusion of OBC reservation within its framework.
