The Yatri Sathi app-based cab service has been officially expanded to Durgapur and Asansol, two key industrial cities in West Bengal, as part of the West Bengal government’s initiative to improve transportation facilities in the region. This marks the continued growth of the app service, which is already operational in Kolkata, Siliguri, and other parts of the state. With nearly 30 lakh users statewide, the Yatri Sathi app aims to offer an accessible, affordable, and safe alternative to traditional taxi services.
The service has been launched through a collaboration between the West Bengal government and the West Bengal Police. The expansion to Durgapur and Asansol allows users to book a cab from any location within the cities via the Yatri Sathi mobile app. This app is designed to provide a streamlined, user-friendly experience, enabling users to select their pick-up and drop-off points seamlessly. One of the primary goals of the service is to ensure safety for passengers, especially women, by performing background checks on both drivers and vehicles before they can be registered in the system.
Abhishek Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police, confirmed the launch of the Yatri Sathi service in Durgapur and Asansol, emphasizing that the service would enhance convenience, security, and affordability for the people in these regions. "The drivers are being verified, and the service will be very beneficial for women’s safety. It is also pocket-friendly," said Gupta. The service’s affordability makes it an attractive option for daily commuters and occasional travelers, as it provides a cost-effective alternative to more traditional modes of transportation.
The launch also includes provisions for driver training to ensure high-quality service. Drivers must register their vehicles in the system, with the app's platform verifying all necessary documents before they can start offering rides. Additionally, traffic police are providing support to ensure smooth operations, and proper monitoring mechanisms are being put in place to maintain safety and accountability.
Along with the Durgapur and Asansol launch, the Yatri Sathi service has been running successfully in Siliguri, which serves as a key gateway for tourists heading to Darjeeling. In Siliguri, special zones around Siliguri Junction, New Jalpaiguri Station, and Bagdogra Airport have been designated as booking points. This makes it easier for passengers to access the service. These zones are designed to facilitate convenient and quick access for both local commuters and tourists. The service also benefits tourists traveling to Darjeeling, where the app-based cabs provide an affordable and convenient option for getting to hill stations.
The Yatri Sathi service is part of a broader initiative to enhance transportation infrastructure across the state, particularly in industrial and tourist regions. Authorities are working to further expand the app-based taxi service to other areas, with plans to ensure full integration with the state’s public transport system.
