Young man stages ‘Sholay-style’ protest in Purulia, demands marriage from water tank

A dramatic real-life scene unfolded in the Dulmi area of Purulia on Sunday, resembling a famous moment from the classic film Sholay. Abbas Ansari, a 22-year-old resident of Rampur village, climbed atop a tall water tank and threatened not to come down unless his demand to get married was met. The spectacle drew comparisons to the iconic character ‘Veeru’, played by Dharmendra, in the popular movie scene.

According to locals, Abbas had been insisting on marriage for some time, and his family had assured him that they would arrange it. However, early on Sunday, without informing anyone, he reached the Dulmi area and climbed the water tank. His actions quickly attracted public attention, with hundreds gathering below to witness the unfolding drama. Police from Purulia Sadar Police Station, along with fire brigade personnel, rushed to the spot to handle the situation. Abbas’s father, Habib Ansari, pleaded with him to come down safely. The young man’s persistent demand for marriage led to tense moments as authorities tried to calm him and ensure his safety.
