In the flickering glow of post Jagaddhatri puja immersion that should have pulsed with joy, a rage over eggs consumption spiraled into senseless bloodshed in Hooghly district's Kamarpukur, leaving a 26-year-old youth Ramchandra Ghoshal lifeless and his family shattered. It was today midnight in Kamarpukur's Lahabazar area when post Jagaddhatri Puja immersion feast at a local club, clashed anew with friends over a few who didn't get eggs. What began as murmurs of unfairness at the club erupted into violence as the group trudged homeward—the accused, Raju Maity, allegedly beating with a stick striking Ramchandra squarely on the neck to death. The young man crumpled instantly, his pulse fading before horrified eyes, a stark reminder of how fragile tempers can fracture lives in the hush of rural Bengal.
The revelry at the club had masked brewing tensions; witnesses, including Ramchandra's brother-in-law, recounted how two or three men, including the victim, fumed when eggs ran short igniting arguments that simmered. He stated that there was a feast at the club and Raju Maiti hit him on the head with a stick on the way back from feast. He fell unconscious immediately. Family members, roused by frantic calls, discovered Ramchandra laid on the ground, neck swollen and unresponsive. They rushed him to Kamarpukur Rural Hospital, where doctors confirmed declared him dead. The local club club president distanced the organization, claiming that nothing happened regarding the club's feast and whatever happened post immersion he is not aware but the family's anguish painted a different picture of neglect in the critical moments.
Bengal Police bolstered by freshly installed CCTVs swiftly arrested Raju Maity, Ramchandra's friend turned fatal foe, and launched probe. The victim's father, eyes brimming with tears, lamented, "The one who killed him should be hanged... My daughter's wedding is ahead. With Ramchandra's mother, sister, wife, and parents left to navigate an unthinkable void, this tragedy underscores the urgent need for cooler heads amid festive fervor, where a single swing can silence dreams forever. Investigations continue, but for one family, justice can't mend the irreparable.
