A 32-year-old man named Govinda Panja was shot dead while attempting to prevent a robbery in the Panakua area under Bishnupur police station in South 24 Parganas on the night of Sunday, May 11. According to police, Panja tried to stop a group of miscreants who opened fire, resulting in his death on the spot. The incident triggered tension in the area, prompting an immediate police response.
Following the incident, Diamond Harbour district police formed a special investigation team under the leadership of Additional Superintendent of Police Mithun Kumar Dey. On Monday night, the team arrested Ashiq Molla during a search operation. Based on information obtained during his interrogation, police arrested two more accused—Kaushik Adhikari and Shamim Sheikh—from the Nahajari area under Bishnupur Block 2. Further questioning led to the identification of Sourav Mandal as the alleged mastermind behind the shooting.
Police launched a search operation across multiple locations and arrested Sourav Mandal from the Basanti police station area. Two more individuals, Babulal Sardar and Debashis Naskar, were also arrested in connection with the case. A total of six accused have been taken into custody. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the incident and any additional individuals involved.
