A case of alleged harassment involving members of the Nagpur University women’s karate team has surfaced after a group of youths reportedly misbehaved with the players on a moving train. The incident occurred while the team was travelling to participate in a national-level competition in Balasore. Officials said the accused youths were later detained by the Railway Protection Force.
According to details, around 10 to 12 members of the university’s women’s karate team left Nagpur on Saturday morning aboard the Puri–Ahmedabad Express to travel towards Odisha. The team, accompanied by one female and one male coach, reached Bhubaneswar on Sunday and then boarded the Falaknuma Express to continue their journey to Balasore for the competition.
During the journey, several youths reportedly boarded the same coach where the players were seated. The female athletes were occupying different berths across the compartment when the youths allegedly began passing lewd remarks and attempted to touch them. The players initially tried to reason with the group, but the harassment reportedly continued.
With the athletes seated in separate berths and coaches, immediate assistance was difficult to obtain. Distressed by the situation, some players contacted their family members and recorded videos of the incident to document what was happening. Families later alerted railway authorities about the alleged harassment.
At the next station, personnel from the Railway Protection Force detained the accused youths and removed them from the train. A complaint regarding the incident was subsequently registered with the Government Railway Police at Bhadrak Railway Station, and further investigation is underway.
