Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, addressing migrant workers in West Bengal, urged them to participate in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections before returning to their workplaces after Eid celebrations.

She expressed concern over the possibility of losing citizenship under a BJP-led government, stating, "I would like to request all the migrant workers who have come here to celebrate Eid please don't go back without voting because if you don't vote in the coming days, they will take away your Aadhar card and your citizenship."

Banerjee vehemently opposed the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state, citing the repercussions witnessed in Assam, and expressed apprehension towards the BJP's proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Banerjee's plea coincided with the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in three constituencies of West Bengal – Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri (SC), and Alipurduars (ST), all previously won by the BJP. The BJP maintained its stronghold in Coochbehar and Alipurduars during the 2021 assembly polls, while the TMC secured victory in Jalpaiguri. The chief minister's warning underscores the intense political battleground as both parties vie for dominance in the region.
