At least 19 people were killed and 30 injured when a speeding bus veered off the road and fell into a ditch in Bangladesh on Sunday, according to media reports.

Around 7.30 am, a Dhaka-bound bus driven by Emad Paribahan lost control on a motorway near Madaripur, according to the police. Although many of the injured were in serious condition, the death toll was predicted to rise, according to the police.

According to Madaripur Police Superintendent Md Masud Alam, the injured were taken to various medical facilities. Alam said, "the accident is thought to have been caused by careless driving and mechanical failure of the bus," according to a report.

According to Shiplu Ahmed, Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service, Faridpur, "It is thought that the wheel of the speeding bus burst, causing it to lose control and crash heavily into the ditch." As per Lima Khanam, duty officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters, three fire service units are now involved in rescue operations.

They claimed that the names of the deceased and the injured were pending. More than 43 people boarded the Emad Paribahan bus as it departed for Dhaka, according to Md. Sabuj Khan, the counter employee at the Shonadanga bus station.

Bangladesh has a high rate of traffic accidents because of the country's outdated, poorly maintained roadways, as well as its underqualified drivers.
