Illegal mining: Four feared killed, 6 injured in Dhanbad

Four people were reportedly killed and six others seriously injured in an illegal mining incident today at West Modidih Colliery of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) under Tetulmari police station, about 20 km away.

According to unofficial sources, the incident took place around 5 am and hundreds of nearby Basti residents was engaged in illegal mining when the roof of the mines suddenly caved in and some of them were crushed by debris containing coal and stone.

Fearing police action, the villagers freed the trapped people and took them for treatment. Four people reportedly died on the spot. A large number of coal sacks were found abandoned near the entrance of the illegal mining tunnel.

However, coal company officials and Tetulmari police station officer Ashish Kumar Yadav denied that any such incident took place at the mine. The mine is operated by the outsourcing company BS Mining. Officials of the outsourcing company also denied the incident and were dozing off at the illegal mining site as the morning news of the mine disaster spread.
