West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has initiated the construction of a 2.5-kilometer road from Ratanpur Netaji Sangh to Athalia Navodaya in Singur. The road is part of a larger project that will see the construction of roads in 30,000 villages across 22 districts of the state.
During the inauguration, Banerjee criticized the central government for failing to provide financial assistance to West Bengal for various projects. She suggested that supporting the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was a mistake and stated that the central government had not released 7000 crore rupees owed to the state. Banerjee further stated that despite economic challenges, West Bengal had made progress in areas such as education, exemplified by initiatives like Medhasree and Kanyashree.
Banerjee emphasized the state government's commitment to development, mentioning that they had sent a proposal to the central government to acquire Jessop and Dunlop, but approval had been pending for five years. She also highlighted the state government's support for its employees and noted that they continued to fund central schemes, despite the central government's lack of support. Banerjee urged the need for smart and strategic development, rather than just cosmetic changes.
The road construction project is expected to be completed within 100 days, and Banerjee hopes that it will lead to the development of West Bengal's infrastructure and overall growth.
