IAS officer’s grandparents commit suicide in Haryana, blame children for crime

A seven-year-old couple in Badhra town of Charkhi Dadri district of Haryana committed suicide by ingesting sulphate tablets late on Wednesday evening. But before taking the extreme step, the grandparents of the Haryana 2021 cadre IAS officer left behind a note accusing the IAS officer's parents and other family members of ill-treatment and not providing even two meals a day.

The deceased have been identified as Jagdish Chand (78) and his wife Bhaagli (77), both natives of Gopi village near Badhra.

In his note, Chand wrote that his sons own property worth around Rs 30 crore in the city but refused to support them. He wrote that his soul will rest in peace only when those who committed atrocities against him are punished. He also pledged to donate all his property and fixed deposits to the local Arya Samaj unit.

“I couldn't bear to be humiliated by my own children, so I consumed sulfa. Neelam, Vikas, Sunita, and Virender are responsible for my death… No children in this world can commit such atrocities on their parents… I request the people who are reading this letter… and the government should punish them. Only then will our souls rest in peace,” he wrote.

The police converted the suicide report into a complaint and booked four people, including the policeman's parents and two other family members of the deceased couple, for inciting suicide. The FIR, registered at the Badhra police station, names Chand's son Virender Arya, his wife Sunita, Neelam, who is the wife of Chand's late son Mahender, and her accomplice Vikas, son of Ved Prakash, as accused.

“I was staying with my younger son, Mahender, who died six years ago. His wife Neelam provided me with food for a few days, but later she indulged in immoral activities with Vikas, the son of Ved Prakash. When I protested, I was asked to leave home. I had to stay in a nursing home for two years. Later, my wife became paralyzed, and we started living with our second son Virender, but they also started giving us leftover food,” he further wrote.

On receiving information, the police rushed the couple to a private hospital in Badhra, but they were referred to Charkhi Dadri Civil Hospital, where they died. One of the grandsons of the deceased is an IAS officer and is currently undergoing training, and another grandson is an officer in the Army.
