A smuggler attempting to cross the border near Dobila, a border outpost in North 24 Parganas district, was arrested by Border Security Force (BSF) jawans on Monday night. The smuggler, identified as Devashish Devnath and a resident of the district, was found to have tied five gold biscuits weighing 581.27 grams to his leg inside his pants. The estimated value of the gold biscuits is Rs 36 lakh 31 thousand 568.
According to a statement issued by the BSF on Tuesday morning, the jawans had become suspicious of Devnath's movements and surrounded him before discovering the gold biscuits. The smuggler was riding a motorcycle at the time of his arrest, which has also been seized. Devnath has claimed that he was acting on the instructions of Bangladeshi smuggler Gogan Mandal, who had promised to pay him two thousand rupees for the task.
The arrested smuggler has been handed over to the Custom Department Tetulia for further legal action, and is currently being interrogated. The BSF has commended its jawans for their swift action in apprehending the smuggler and preventing the illegal movement of goods across the border.
