The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the violence that took place in West Bengal's Shibpur on the occasion of Ram Navami.
After hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari, a division bench headed by Acting Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam of the Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal Police to hand over all records and CCTV footage related to the matter to the Center within two weeks . She further directed the police officers to send the documents to the NIA thereafter.
Adhikari, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and staunch critic of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government, had sought an NIA probe alleging that the bombs exploded during the violence in Shibpur.
On March 30, clashes broke out between the two groups in West Bengal's Howrah district.
According to media reports, several vehicles were set on fire, after which police had to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.
