Seven Assam engineering college students killed in Jalukbari road accident

Seven people, all third-year engineering students, were killed and several others injured when an SUV lost control, jumped a barrier and collided head-on with a pickup truck on the opposite side of the road in Guwahati's Jalukbari area in the wee hours of Monday.

The impact was so strong that the students were killed on the spot and both vehicles were severely damaged, police said.

The victims were studying at Assam Engineering College. A total of 10 men were inside the car in a black Scorpio SUV when the accident occurred. Seven of them were killed and three others were seriously injured, they said. The students borrowed the vehicle.

Those who died were identified as — Arindam Bhallal of Guwahati, Niyor Deka of Golaghat, Kaushik Mohan of Charaideo, Upangshu Sarmah of Nagaon, Rajkiran Bhuyan of Majuli, Emon Gayan of Dibrugarh and Kaushik Baruah of Mangaldoi. Injured – Arpan Bhuyan and Mrinmoy Borah, both from Jorhat and Arnab Chakraborty from Bongaigaon, were taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where their condition is said to be critical.

Two men who were traveling in the pickup truck that the Scorpio collided with are also in critical condition. According to local media reports, students recently contested student union elections and lost.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident and offered condolences to the grieving families.

He has spoken to the GMCH authorities and directed them to offer all possible medical assistance to the injured.
