Government constitutes peace committee in Manipur, Governor to chair

 The Central government has established a peace committee in Manipur, chaired by state Governor Anusuiya Uikey, in response to the widespread violence that has occurred in the northeastern state. The violence has caused significant unrest and instability in the region.

The committee consists of various members, including the Chief Minister, ministers from the state government, Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), and leaders from different political parties. In addition to political figures, the committee also includes former civil servants, educationists, litterateurs, artists, social workers, and representatives of different ethnic groups. The diverse composition of the committee aims to ensure broad representation and perspectives.

The need for the formation of this committee arose due to the large-scale violence that erupted following a rally organized in the hill districts on May 3. The rally, known as the "Tribal Solidarity March," was organized to protest against the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status by the Meitei community. The violence that ensued has caused significant loss of life and injuries.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has stated that the committee's main objective is to facilitate the peace-making process among the various ethnic groups in Manipur. It will work towards promoting peaceful dialogue and negotiations between conflicting parties or groups. The committee will also focus on fostering mutual understanding among different ethnic groups in the region and helping establish channels for peaceful communication.

 The formation of the peace committee comes shortly after Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Manipur from May 29 to June 1, during which he assessed the situation in the state. During his visit, Shah announced the formation of the committee as a measure to address the ongoing violence and promote peace and stability in Manipur.

The violence in Manipur has had devastating consequences, with over 100 fatalities and more than 300 people injured. The establishment of the peace committee reflects the government's commitment to addressing the conflict and finding peaceful resolutions to the underlying issues causing unrest in the state. The committee's efforts will be crucial in fostering peace, reconciliation, and stability in Manipur.
