College security guard held over Kolkata student's alleged gang-rape case; 4th arrest so far
The Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended 15 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu near the Pakistan-Sri Lanka maritime border, specifically in the vicinity of Jaladamparai. These fishermen, who are natives of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, were caught during their fishing activities in the area. Furthermore, the Sri Lankan Navy has also seized two boats that belonged to these fishermen.
This incident is not an isolated occurrence, as similar incidents involving Indian fishermen have taken place in the past. On January 4, the Sri Lankan Navy detained 12 Indian fishermen along with their two boats near Delft Island. Those fishermen were also from Rameswaram district in Tamil Nadu.
These incidents highlight the challenges faced by Indian fishermen who often venture into the waters for their livelihood. However, due to the proximity of fishing grounds and overlapping maritime boundaries, they unintentionally cross into international waters, leading to confrontations with the coastal security forces of neighboring countries like Sri Lanka.
The governments of India and Sri Lanka have been engaged in discussions and diplomatic efforts to address the issue of fishermen crossing maritime borders. Bilateral mechanisms are being explored to ensure the safety and well-being of fishermen while respecting the territorial waters and boundaries of the respective countries involved.
Efforts are underway to find long-term solutions that can facilitate peaceful fishing activities and maintain harmonious relations between India and Sri Lanka.
