On Saturday, city police arrested a Rapido driver for allegedly "masturbating while riding" sexually harassing a female passenger and opened proceedings against Rapido for endangering the safety of customers.
"Representatives of the Rapido company have been called in for questioning. Applications must ensure the safety of their customers. Rapido must tighten the vetting of their riders, they are endangering the safety of their customers,” said CK Baba, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East).
The victim took to Twitter to share the ordeal she faced with a Rapido rider when she booked a cycle taxi to get home from City Hall in Electronic City.
“We have registered a case based on the tweets of the victim. We have arrested the main accused. He was not assigned a cyclist, instead went to collect on another bike. Legal action has been initiated against the suspect and Rapido,” The Southeast DCP said.
The police have asked Rapido to tighten the vetting of the taxi service's cyclists to ensure the safety of customers.
“I found several technical glitches in the Rapido app. The Rapido motorcyclist was not on duty when this incident occurred. The suspect went to pick up a customer on another bike. The company should ensure that it is not possible to book rides for a bike if the rider is on holiday,” the report said.
