The Rajpath police in Maharashtra's Amravati district have reportedly registered a case against right-wing activist Sambhaji Bhide for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Mahatma Gandhi. The news comes a day after the matter was taken up in the assembly by Congress.
The 90-year-old activist - who supports Hindutva - has been charged with violating Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code. This section deals with promoting hatred between different groups based on religion, race, place of birth, language, or residence and engaging in activities that undermine social harmony.
Bhide was accused by Congress of making derogatory remarks about the Gandhi family. Founder of Shri Shiv Pratishtha Hindustan outfit spoke about the father of the nation during a program at Bharat Mangal Hall in the Bandera Road area of Amravati district on Thursday.
Earlier, Babasaheb Thorat - leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in Maharashtra - had called for strict action against Bhide. He asked the Maharashtra government to make a statement in the House as Bhide's comments were shameful. Thorat also questioned Bhide's repeated controversial statements and said it was necessary to find out who was supporting him politically.
Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan also criticized Bhide. Chavan, who sought his arrest, said such a person - who makes defamatory statements against Gandhi - has no right to move freely.
Another senior Congress leader wondered why the Maharashtra government was not taking any action against him. Yashomati Thakur, a former minister, has issued a warning that her party will not remain silent if such comments are repeated.
Congress state secretary Nand-Kishore Kuyateh complained to Bhide at the Rajpath police station. He demanded that a lawsuit be filed against him.
