Team India won the eighth Asia Cup title with a resounding victory over Sri Lanka on Sunday. In the thrilling final match, pacer Mohammed Siraj emerged as the star of the show, securing a stunning six-wicket haul and earning the Player of the Match accolade. However, it was spinner Kuldeep Yadav who stole the spotlight, being named the Player of the Series for his outstanding performances.
Kuldeep's remarkable feats included a five-wicket haul against arch-rivals Pakistan and a crucial four-wicket performance against Sri Lanka in the final. As Team India shifts its focus to the upcoming One Day Internationals (ODIs) against Australia in preparation for the highly anticipated World Cup 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, has hailed Kuldeep as India's "trump card."
Having closely observed Kuldeep's talent during the Indian Premier League (IPL), Agarkar expressed his confidence in the young spinner, stating, "He's a guy with special skillset. Every guy needs to be shown faith, and the Indian team management has done that, and the results are there. He's a trump card (for us). Most teams are finding him a challenge. All of us are excited for what lies ahead," during a press conference held on Monday.
It has been confirmed that Kuldeep Yadav will be rested for the first two matches, in the ODIs against Australia commencing on September 22. He will rejoin the team for the third and final ODI on September 27. Additionally, captain Rohit Sharma and senior batsman Virat Kohli will also be given a break for the initial matches.
