The West Bengal Private Tutors Development Association has accused approximately five thousand government school teachers in 20 districts of West Bengal of providing private tuition in exchange for fees, contravening a Calcutta High Court order. These allegations have led to the submission of a list to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE), with the association urging authorities to investigate and take disciplinary action against the accused teachers, as mandated by the court's directives.
The Calcutta High Court has specified that while teachers can offer separate classes to academically disadvantaged students, they are not permitted to charge fees for such services. If the board officials fail to respond promptly, the association has threatened to return to the Calcutta High Court, accusing the officials of contempt of court. The Advanced Society of Headmasters and Headmistresses, representing government school heads in West Bengal, has voiced its support for the association's demands.
