In a swift response to a massive infiltration attempt by Hamas on Israeli soil, Israel has launched 'Operation Iron Swords' in the Gaza Strip. The operation comes after Hamas fired nearly 5,000 rockets into Israel and dispatched armed militants with the intent to target Israeli civilians. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) declared a state of readiness for war as rocket barrages and infiltrations heightened tensions in the region.
The IDF issued a statement confirming the state of readiness for war, citing the extensive rocket fire into Israeli territory from Gaza and the infiltration of Hamas terrorists. Residents in southern and central Israel were urged to stay in protected areas, while those near the Gaza periphery were advised to remain in secure spaces. In response to the attacks, Israel also launched retaliatory airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, with the Chief of Staff, Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, overseeing the military's response. Israel holds Hamas accountable for the escalation and vowed that the group 'will bear the results and responsibility for the events.'
As the situation rapidly unfolded, a barrage of rockets struck southern and central Israel, including Jerusalem, resulting in casualties. At least one rocket hit a building in the Gederot Regional Council, claiming the life of a woman in her 60s. Medical teams from Magen David Adom reported treating multiple casualties, including two in critical condition and others with varying degrees of injuries. In response to the crisis, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant authorized a widescale call-up of reservists, signaling Israel's determination to address the ongoing security threat.
