In a development welcomed by tea garden workers in North Bengal, the management and unions have reached an agreement on the bonus payment for the fiscal year 2022-23.
Tea gardens in the Dooars and Terai regions, excluding Darjeeling, will provide a bonus of 19 percent to their employees and workers for the upcoming year. This marks a slight reduction from the 20 percent bonus paid out in the previous fiscal year. However, the bonus dispute for Darjeeling tea gardens remains unresolved, with unions demanding 20 percent and management proposing an 8.33 percent payout.
Around 135 tea gardens operate in North Bengal, where the laborers' conditions have been a subject of concern. The laborers have been continuously advocating for bonus increments, yet their demands have not been fully met. Workers' unions are now pressing for a three-tier meeting, involving plantation owners, the state government, and the central government, to address their concerns.
