The State Excise Department is on track to meet its revenue target within the first seven months of the current financial year, experiencing an extraordinary 20% growth in income from liquor sales. The unprecedented growth has pushed the department's revenue for the financial year 2023-24 to approximately Rs 20,000 crores.
The revenue target has already been exceeded in the last seven months, with the department earning over Rs 10,000 crores during this period. Officials anticipate further revenue growth during festive seasons, including Christmas and Diwali, as well as a notable spike in income during recent festivals, with liquor sales surpassing Rs 600 crore in five days of puja, marking a 15% increase from the previous year.
The remarkable financial performance of the Excise Department, especially in the sale of liquor, has been attributed to the absence of "dry days" during the recent puja festival, with Saptami and Navami seeing the highest volume of foreign liquor sales. The department's success in achieving and exceeding revenue targets reflects increased consumer demand, suggesting a positive economic outlook for the state in this sector.
