Just a day before the celebration of 'Bhai Dooj,' the prices of fish and meat experienced a sharp surge in Kolkata on Tuesday, leaving customers disheartened. Known as 'Bhai Phota' in West Bengal, the festival involves women performing the traditional "tilak" ritual for their brothers, accompanied by a lavish feast featuring non-vegetarian dishes like fish, mutton, and chicken. However, escalating prices have forced many to alter their planned menus for the occasion.
In retail markets, Hilsa fish is now priced between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500 per kg, while pomfret is ranging from Rs 350 to Rs 400 per kg. Bhetki fish is available at Rs 600 to Rs 650 per kg, and lobster is being sold between Rs 650 and Rs 700 per kg. Additionally, the price of mutton has reached Rs 800 per kg in some markets. Chicken, relatively more affordable, is being sold between Rs 150 and Rs 200 per kg. The soaring prices have compelled individuals to scale back their festive menus, reflecting the impact on the celebration of 'Bhai Dooj' in the region.
