The low-pressure created over the Southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression named Mithili, triggering warnings across several districts, with a particular focus on Digha, Ramnagar, and Kanthi in East Midnapore coastal areas. The administration has issued precautionary warnings, and the tourist city of Digha is experiencing fluctuating weather conditions, alternating between cloudy and sunny skies.
The latest report from the Indian Meteorological Department predicts heavy to very heavy rains in Odisha, West Bengal, and coastal areas of Bangladesh, accompanied by strong gusts of wind. The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has evolved into Cyclone 'Mithili,' expected to make landfall on the coast of Bangladesh on Friday night or early Saturday morning. Coastal areas of Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh are anticipated to experience heavy rains and strong winds due to the cyclone's impact.
The deep depression, now Cyclone Mithili, is positioned 190 km south and southeast of Paradwip in Odisha, 220 km south of Digha in West Bengal, and 390 km south and southwest of Khepupara in Bangladesh. The forecast indicates a north-northeast movement, with a projected landfall near Khepupara on the Bangladesh coast during the night of November 17 or early morning on November 18. During the landfall, wind speeds of 60-70 kmph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h.
This marks the second deep depression in the Bay of Bengal this season, named 'Mithili' by the Maldives. Yellow and orange alerts have been issued in the affected states, along with warnings on the Bangladesh coast. Emergency measures are being implemented to address the impending cyclone.
