In a daring incident on Tuesday night, a group of four individuals posing as Income Tax officials conducted a fake raid on a gold shop located on Kumir Jala Road, Serampore. Sporting IT officer identity cards, they intimidated the shop owner, Ajay, a Maharashtra native, and looted cash and gold, taking advantage of the absence of proper paperwork for gold transactions in similar establishments along the road.
The perpetrators arrived at the shop at around 8 pm, displaying their identity cards before initiating the sham investigation. Ajay and several other gold welding shops in the area operate without formal documentation when melting gold biscuits. Exploiting this vulnerability, the fake IT officials seized the opportunity to extort money and valuables from Ajay. To further intimidate him, they took Ajay in a vehicle and insisted on contacting the Income Tax office near Delhi Road and left the scene after commandeering cash and gold.
Local traders promptly informed the Serampore police station, which has initiated an investigation to uncover the identities of the fake IT officials. CCTV footage is being scrutinized to gather evidence and expose the orchestrated sham raid.
